- Mining and minerals
Mining balance sheets are dominated by fixed assets: haul trucks, processing plants, conveyors, tailings facilities and capitalized development costs. Operations often sit in countries whose local currency differs from the group's reporting currency, typically US dollars. Getting asset values right in both currencies is not optional; it drives impairment testing, covenant reporting and investor confidence.
The industry challenge
Dynamics 365 Finance can maintain fixed asset values in both the accounting currency and a reporting currency. Over time, though, the two can drift apart in ways that need correcting: historical rates applied inconsistently, assets migrated from older systems with approximate reporting currency values, or transactions posted before the reporting currency set-up was finalized.
When that happens, finance teams have typically fixed it with manual journals. Someone calculates the difference asset by asset in a spreadsheet, posts adjustments to the ledger and keeps the workings for auditors. For a mine with thousands of assets, that is a large, error-prone exercise, and the adjustment does not always reach the fixed asset sub-ledger in a way that keeps it consistent with the general ledger.
For listed miners, where asset values support impairment models and are scrutinized closely by auditors, that inconsistency is a real risk.
What Microsoft is delivering
Finance 10.0.49 introduces, in preview, a reporting currency adjustment process for fixed assets. Finance teams can generate adjustment entries, review them and then post them. The process is designed to correct reporting currency values within the fixed asset process, rather than relying on manual general ledger journals.
Because it is a preview, it is intended for evaluation in non-production environments for now.
Where the value shows up
| Business area | Impact |
|---|---|
| Group reporting | Fixed asset values in reporting currency that can be corrected through a controlled process |
| Sub-ledger integrity | Adjustments kept within the fixed asset process, aligned with the general ledger |
| Close effort | Less spreadsheet calculation and fewer manual journals |
| Impairment and covenants | More reliable asset values feeding models and lender reporting |
| Audit | A reviewable adjustment process with clearer evidence |
A worked scenario
(An illustrative example.) A mid-tier gold miner operates in a country with a volatile local currency and reports to investors in US dollars. After migrating to Dynamics 365 Finance, the group finds that reporting currency values for older assets at one site do not match the values in its previous system.
In a sandbox, the fixed asset team uses the preview process to generate proposed adjustment entries for the affected assets. They review the proposals with group reporting, investigate a few outliers and refine the input data. Once the feature reaches general availability and the approach is signed off, they plan to post the adjustments in production, replacing what would otherwise have been several hundred manual journal lines.
Adoption considerations
- Treat it as a preview. Evaluate in a sandbox and wait for general availability before production use.
- Diagnose the cause first. Understand why reporting currency values diverged so you do not keep correcting the same problem.
- Agree the rate policy. Group reporting and auditors should agree which historical rates apply before any adjustments are posted.
- Plan review and approval. Decide who reviews generated adjustments and how approval is evidenced.
- Coordinate with impairment work. Time adjustments so they do not disrupt impairment testing or reporting deadlines.
The bottom line
For mining companies, fixed assets are the balance sheet. A controlled way to generate, review and post reporting currency adjustments addresses a long-standing pain point for multinational asset-heavy groups. It is still in preview, so the right step now is to evaluate it and prepare policies. An experienced Dynamics 365 Finance adviser can help you test the process and plan for general availability.
