Health and beauty brands depend on a steady flow of online orders, subscriptions and promotions. If the link between Shopify and Business Central stops, orders stop reaching fulfilment, stock levels drift and finance loses sight of revenue. Business Central 29.0 includes changes that keep that link healthy, plus one deadline that every merchant needs to know about.
The industry challenge
Shopify releases a new API version every quarter and supports each one for 12 months. Integrations that fall behind eventually stop working. For a beauty brand running daily promotions and influencer launches, a broken connection can mean:
- Orders piling up in Shopify without reaching the warehouse
- Stock levels on the website drifting from reality, causing overselling
- Price and product updates failing silently
Troubleshooting has also been harder than it should be. When synchronization failed, administrators had to dig through logs to find out what went wrong. Sometimes one bad item stopped a whole product sync.
What Microsoft delivered in Business Central 29.0
According to Microsoft, Business Central 29.0 includes several changes to the Shopify connector:
A current API. The connector now uses the Shopify API released in July 2026. This brings security changes and functional updates such as market-driven shipping methods.
An important deadline. Microsoft states that the connector in the April 2026 release relies on API version 2026-01, which is supported until 31 December 2026. To keep your integration running, you need to upgrade to the latest Business Central version before that date.
Expiring access tokens. The connector supports Shopify's expiring offline access tokens. Access tokens refresh automatically before their one-hour lifetime runs out. Refresh tokens rotate and stay valid for up to 90 days. If that window expires, an administrator must reconnect the shop from the Shopify Shop Card.
Easier monitoring. Microsoft lists several operational improvements:
- A With errors view on the Shopify Log
- Skipped Records and API Errors cues on the Shopify Activities page, highlighted when action is needed
- Product and price sync now skips invalid item unit-of-measure combinations and records the reason, instead of stopping the whole sync
- Clear labels that separate Shopify's own timestamps from Business Central audit fields
Where the value shows up
| Business area | Impact for a health and beauty brand |
|---|---|
| Business continuity | Avoids a connection outage when the old API retires |
| Security | Short-lived, rotating tokens reduce credential risk |
| Operations | One bad item no longer stops the whole product or price sync |
| Support | Errors and skipped records are visible at a glance |
| Data clarity | Easy to tell Shopify timestamps from Business Central ones |
A worked scenario
Consider a skincare brand that sells through Shopify in the UK and EU, with Business Central handling stock, fulfilment and finance (an illustrative example). It's planning a big Black Friday launch.
The operations manager checks the environment version in October and finds it's still on the April 2026 release. Knowing the API deadline, they schedule the 29.0 update for early November, well before peak season. After the update, they open the Shopify Activities page. A Skipped Records cue shows three items with invalid unit-of-measure combinations. Before, those items would have stopped the entire price sync. Now the rest of the catalogue syncs normally, and the team fixes the three items before launch.
Adoption considerations
- Check your version now. If you're on the April 2026 release or earlier, plan to update before 31 December 2026.
- Avoid peak-season surprises. Schedule the update before Black Friday and holiday trading, not during.
- Watch the new cues. Make the Shopify Activities page part of daily checks.
- Plan for reconnection. Make sure an administrator knows how to reconnect the shop if the refresh-token window lapses.
- Turn on logging. Keep skipped-record details so issues can be fixed at source.
The bottom line
For health and beauty brands, the Shopify connection is the bloodstream of the business. Business Central 29.0 keeps it on a supported API, strengthens security and makes problems easier to spot. With the 31 December 2026 deadline for the previous API version, this is one update that shouldn't wait.
If you're unsure whether your environment is ready, now is the time to check your Business Central version and Shopify set-up with an experienced adviser.
