- Multi-version ER configuration validation and persistent history
- Availability

- Industry focus
- Global consumer goods companies
A global consumer goods company might operate in fifty or more countries, each with its own tax returns, e-invoicing rules, payment formats and statutory reports. In Dynamics 365, many of those outputs are Electronic Reporting configurations, and each one has versions: Microsoft's base versions, local derived versions, and customizations layered on top.
The industry challenge
Keeping that landscape healthy is a governance task in its own right. When Microsoft releases a new base version, or regulations change, derived configurations have to be checked to see whether they still work. Validation is how ER designers find errors and warnings in a configuration before it fails in production.
Done one version at a time, validation is slow. A central finance systems team responsible for dozens of countries may need to validate many configurations after each update, each through a separate action. And if validation results are not kept, there is no easy way to show what was checked, when and with what outcome. That matters when an auditor asks how the organization controls changes to its tax reporting, or when a local team asks whether a problem existed before the last update.
What Microsoft delivered in Finance 10.0.49
Finance 10.0.49 allows multiple ER configuration versions to be validated at once, and keeps a persistent history of validation results. The capability is enabled by default.
Instead of validating versions one by one and capturing results manually, teams can run validation across several versions and refer back to the results later.
Where the value shows up
| Business area | Impact |
|---|---|
| Change management | Faster checking of many configurations after updates or regulatory changes |
| Governance | A lasting record of what was validated and the results |
| Audit | Evidence of control over tax and statutory reporting configurations |
| Central teams | Better visibility across country-specific formats |
| Risk | Problems found before they affect a filing or payment run |
A worked scenario
(An illustrative example.) A personal care and household products company runs Dynamics 365 Finance in over 40 countries. Its global finance systems team owns roughly a hundred ER configurations, many derived from Microsoft base versions.
After each update, the team used to validate the most critical configurations one at a time and record the results in a tracking spreadsheet, leaving lower-priority formats unchecked. Now they validate several versions in one pass and use the stored validation history as their record. When the internal audit team reviews controls over VAT reporting later in the year, the history shows which configurations were validated after each update and what was found.
Adoption considerations
- Build an inventory. List your ER configurations, their owners and which base versions they derive from.
- Define a routine. Make multi-version validation a standard step after each service update or regulatory change.
- Triage warnings. Agree how to handle warnings versus errors so the team focuses on what matters.
- Use the history. Point auditors and local teams to the stored results rather than separate trackers.
- Coordinate with Microsoft updates. Plan validation cycles around the release calendar so you are not surprised by base version changes.
The bottom line
For multinational consumer goods groups, ER configurations are critical compliance assets, and they need governing like any other. Validating multiple versions at once, with persistent history, makes that governance faster and easier to evidence. It is a practical tool for central finance systems teams carrying a large regulatory footprint. Talk to an experienced Dynamics 365 adviser about building it into your release management process.
