Contract machining and job shops

Contract machining shops juggle dozens of customer jobs across a handful of CNC machines. Planners turn customer demand into production orders, check machine capacity and release work to the shop floor, often several times a day. Every extra click or forgotten step slows that cycle. Business Central 29.0 brings a set of practical improvements to exactly this workflow.

The industry challenge

In a typical job shop:

  • Planning suggestions become firm planned orders, which then have to be released one by one
  • Machine and work centre calendars must be recalculated regularly, or scheduling starts to fail
  • Uncertified BOMs or routings block production, and errors don't always point to the fix
  • Planners move between many pages to find routing links and component details

One common problem is the stale calendar. If nobody recalculates a machine centre's calendar, scheduling eventually runs past the last calendar entry and fails, often at an inconvenient moment.

What Microsoft delivered in Business Central 29.0

According to Microsoft, these improvements put manufacturing information and actions closer to where you work:

  • Released production orders from planning. On the planning worksheet, Carry Out Action Message now offers Released and Released & Print options, creating released production orders directly from accepted planning lines.
  • Calendar actions on the card. Calculate Work Center Calendar and Calculate Machine Center Calendar run from the work centre or machine centre card, for that centre.
  • Calendar warnings. A Calendar Entries Available Until field shows the last date with calendar entries. If it's earlier than the work date, it appears in a warning style so you can recalculate before scheduling fails.
  • Actionable errors for uncertified BOMs and routings.
  • Smaller fixes. Copy Production Order Document excludes the current order from its lookup when statuses match, and Routing Link Code appears on more pages.

Where the value shows up

Business areaImpact for a contract machining shop
Planning speedReleased orders created in one step from planning
Shop floor readinessReleased & Print gets job paperwork out faster
Scheduling reliabilityStale calendars spotted before they cause failures
Error resolutionUncertified BOM and routing problems fixed from the error
NavigationRouting links and component details visible where needed

For job shops, these small time savings add up across every job, every day. Together they shorten the gap between an order arriving and a machine starting work.

A worked scenario

Consider a precision machining subcontractor with eight CNC machines serving aerospace and medical customers (an illustrative example). The planner runs planning every morning.

Before 29.0, she converted planning lines to firm planned orders, then released each one and printed job cards separately. With Business Central 29.0, she uses Released & Print directly from the planning worksheet. Released orders and job cards are ready in one step. While checking capacity, she notices a new five-axis machine shows its calendar entries ending last week, highlighted as a warning. She runs Calculate Machine Center Calendar from the machine centre card, and scheduling works normally.

Adoption considerations

  • Decide when to release directly. Releasing straight from planning suits shops with short lead times. Some may still prefer firm planned orders first.
  • Review calendar warnings weekly. Make checking the Calendar Entries Available Until field part of a routine.
  • Fix certification issues at source. Use actionable errors to correct BOMs and routings properly.
  • Update training. Show planners the new Carry Out Action Message options.
  • Check printing set-up. Make sure production order printing produces the right job cards.

The bottom line

Contract machining shops win on responsiveness, and every minute between order and spindle matters. The manufacturing document and capacity calendar improvements in Business Central 29.0 remove steps, flag problems early and keep planners focused on the work. They're practical changes that make day-to-day production planning smoother.

If production planning feels slower than it should, it's worth reviewing your planning and release process with an experienced Business Central adviser.
